アメリカを代表する現代彫刻家、Melvin Edwards（メルヴィン・エドワーズ）。
抽象彫刻、インスタレーション、版画、教育活動に至るまで幅広い領域で高く評価されてきたアーティストである。鋼鉄を主な素材とするその作品は、社会的・政治的なテーマを内包しながら、20世紀後半から21世紀にかけての美術史に大きな影響を与えてきた。
1963年に制作が始まった代表的シリーズ《Lynch Fragments（リンチ・フラグメンツ）》では、スパイク、ハンマー、鋸、チェーンなどの金属片を溶接した小型の壁面彫刻を通して、「リンチ（人種的暴力）」の記憶を喚起する。それらは、アフリカ系アメリカ人の歴史、闘争、そして希望を象徴する断片でもある。
本書『Melvin Edwards – Echoes of the Weld』は、ニューヨークを拠点とするブラックマス・パブリッシングの創設者であり、アーティストでもあるユスフ・ハッサンによって構想された、メルヴィン・エドワーズの仕事をめぐる親密な探究であり、ひとつの瞑想である。
ユスフ・ハッサンはこのジンを、彫刻と印刷物という異なるメディウムのあいだに交わされる対話として捉えている。彼は、自身の制作プロセスを導いた、エドワーズの仕事への詩的なアプローチについて次のように語っている。

Melvin Edwards is one of the most important contemporary sculptors in the United States. His work—spanning abstract sculpture, installation, printmaking, and pedagogy—has been widely acclaimed. Using steel as his primary material, Edwards has created works that carry profound social and political resonance, exerting a lasting influence on the history of art from the late twentieth century into the twenty-first.
His seminal series Lynch Fragments, begun in 1963, consists of small-scale wall sculptures made from welded metal elements such as spikes, hammers, saws, and chains. These works evoke the memory of lynching as racial violence, while also standing as fragments that embody African American history, struggle, and hope.
Melvin Edwards – Echoes of the Weld is an intimate investigation and a form of meditation on Edwards’s work, conceived by Yusuf Hassan—artist and founder of New York–based BlackMass Publishing.
Hassan approaches this zine as a dialogue between two distinct media: sculpture and the printed page. Reflecting on the poetic approach that guided his process, he writes:
“During the summer I was working on this publication, I immersed myself deeply in his philosophy. In New York, I made quiet journeys to see his sculptures—especially those living outside the walls of museums and institutions. Works that exist within everyday life, exposed to wind and rain, carrying dust, rust, fingerprints, and time itself.”
