イタリアを拠点に活動するフランス人アーティスト、ナタリー・ドゥ・パスキエによる『Campo di Marte』は、1980年代から2020年までに制作した自身の絵画を撮影・切り抜き、それらを並べることで構成された作品集です。パスキエが絵筆を休めていた2020年3月に構想され、形や構成のもつ純粋な視覚的関係性と、その並びが生み出す解釈の余地だけに焦点を当てた、静かで知的な「無意味の遊戯」が展開されます。本書には、タイトルや詩、計算式といった言葉の断片も織り込まれ、イメージたちはまるで「文」のように連なっていきます。これは、言葉を失ったときの沈黙を縫い合わせるような、日常の中のシュルレアリスムともいえる構成である。
『Campo di Marte』は、2021年にローマのMACRO（ローマ現代アート美術館）で開催された同名の展覧会（ルカ・ロ・ピント企画）にあわせて刊行される予定でしたが、新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響により、書籍のみが先行して発表されました。本書は2020年刊行の『CAMPO DI MARTE』の増補版であり、16ページ追加した形で再版された一冊。なおパスキエは本書について、「この本は、展覧会のオープニングに併せて刊行される予定でしたが、そうはなりませんでした。でも、展覧会とこの本は別ものなので、たいしたことではないのです。この本は全くもって展覧会のカタログではありません。どこでも、地下鉄の座席でパラパラと読むこともできます」と語っている。
ナタリー・ドゥ・パスキエは、1981年にエットレ・ソットサスらとともに結成された伝説的なデザイン集団「メンフィス・グループ」の創設メンバーとして、家具やテキスタイル、オブジェ、インテリアのデザインに携わった後、1986年からは絵画へと本格的に移行しました。メンフィスの実験精神や装飾性、空間への意識は、現在の彼女の作品の随所に息づいています。

Campo di Marte, by Nathalie Du Pasquier, a French artist based in Italy, is a collection of works composed by photographing and cutting out her own paintings produced between the 1980s and 2020, then arranging them in sequence. Conceived in March 2020, during a period when Du Pasquier had temporarily put down her paintbrush, the book focuses solely on the formal relationships between shapes and compositions, and the interpretive space that arises from their arrangement. What unfolds is a quiet, intellectual “game of nonsense,” in which fragments of titles, poems, and mathematical formulas are woven together. The images connect like sentences, forming a kind of everyday surrealism—an attempt to stitch together silence at a time when words had failed.
Campo di Marte was originally scheduled to be published alongside the exhibition of the same name, curated by Luca Lo Pinto and held at MACRO (Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome) in 2021. However, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, only the book was released ahead of time. Du Pasquier remarked: “The book was supposed to come out at the same time as the exhibition opening. That didn’t happen, but it’s not a big deal—because the exhibition and the book are two separate things. This book is not a catalogue at all. It’s something you can flip through anywhere, even while sitting on the subway.”
Nathalie Du Pasquier was a founding member of the legendary design collective Memphis Group, established in 1981 with Ettore Sottsass and others. After designing furniture, textiles, objects, and interiors, she transitioned fully to painting in 1986. The experimental spirit, decorative sensibility, and spatial awareness characteristic of Memphis remain vividly present throughout her current work.
Filled with Du Pasquier’s unique color palette and playful sensibility, this book invites the reader to delve ever deeper into her world with each turning page.
