Marc Hundley / The Voyage Out

ニューヨークを拠点に活動するアーティスト／デザイナー、マーク・ハンドリー（1971年生）の初となる本格的な作品集で、本書は300ページを超える。
『The Voyage Out』は、ハンドリーが世界的なファッション・ライフスタイル雑誌『Vogue』のモデルとして活動するためニューヨークへ移り住んだ1993年以降の制作の歩みをたどる一冊である。その後、大工やカメラマンなどさまざまな職を経験しながら身につけた技術や感覚は、現在の多面的な制作活動の基盤となっている。
ハンドリーは、印刷文化や絵画から、木工、デザインに至るまで、さまざまな領域を横断しながら制作を続けている。本書もまた、その多面的な実践に呼応するように、絵画や家具、衣服と、ポスターや贈り物、エフェメラを同列に扱い、ジャンルによる序列を設けることなく構成されている。
さらに、本書には映画監督マット・ウルフがアーティストの双子の兄イアン・ハンドリーに行ったインタビューを収録。マーク・ハンドリーの人生とキャリアをめぐる、もうひとつの歴史が語られるほか、ハンドリー自身によるテキストも掲載され、その幅広い実践や作品を形づくる背景について、自らの言葉で触れている。
 
Marc Hundley (born 1971) is a New York–based artist and designer. The Voyage Out is his first comprehensive monograph, spanning more than 300 pages.
The book traces the development of Hundley’s practice since 1993, when he moved to New York to model for the internationally renowned fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue. In the years that followed, he worked in a variety of professions—including carpentry and photography—acquiring the skills and sensibilities that continue to inform his multidisciplinary practice today.
Working across a wide range of disciplines, from print culture and painting to carpentry and design, Hundley resists conventional artistic categories. Reflecting this approach, the book presents paintings, furniture, and clothing alongside posters, gifts, and ephemera, without imposing any hierarchy between them.
The publication also features an interview conducted by filmmaker Matt Wolf with Hundley’s twin brother, Ian, offering an alternative perspective on the artist’s life and career. In addition, texts by Hundley himself provide further insight into the ideas and influences that shape his expansive body of work.
