ニューヨークとメイン州ブランズウィックを拠点に制作を続けている画家キャサリン・ブラッドフォード(1942年ニューヨーク生)の作品集です。
1970年代以来、ブラッドフォードは、美術界の潮流に迎合することなく、自らの道を切り拓いてきた。メイン州とニューヨークの双方で志を同じくするアーティストたちのコミュニティを築いてきた。
ブラッドフォードの絵画は、形態に対する豊かな創意と、図と地の関係を自在に揺れ動かす感覚によって特徴づけられる。そこに描かれる人物たちは、英雄や恋人、家族やカップル、ビジネスマン、あるいは孤独な個人として現れ、それぞれが物語性を帯びた存在となる。幾重にも重ねられたアクリル絵具によって描かれる色彩豊かな場面は、光に満ちた質感をたたえ、ユーモア、哀感、抽象性のあいだを行き来しながら、多様な比喩的解釈を鑑賞者へと開いていく。
ロンドンを拠点とする美術批評家アリー・ビスワスによる、作品に宿る形而上学的な側面を論じたエッセイをはじめ、アーティストであり作家でもあるダニエル・ガーウィンとの対談、子どもであるローラとアーサー・ブラッドフォードによる、作家の人生と創作を親密な視点から綴った伝記的テキスト、さらにグラーツのHalle für Kunst館長サンドロ・ドロシュルによる、作品世界を総覧する論考を収録。
2015年以降の作品を中心に130点を超える作品を掲載し、とりわけ近年の代表作である《Swimmers》シリーズ、《Mother Paintings》シリーズに焦点を当てることで、作家独自の母性観と女性性へのまなざしを辿ることができる。
ブラッドフォードの絵画は、「わからなさ」を積極的に受け入れている。そのため鑑賞者は、幻想的でありながらどこか見覚えのある広がりのなかを、自らの感覚を頼りに歩むように作品と向き合うことになる。
現在、ブラッドフォードはCanada、Campoli Presti、Kaufmann Repettoに所属。これまでにニューヨーク近代美術館 PS1（MoMA PS1）やブルックリン美術館をはじめとする数多くの美術館・芸術機関で作品を発表してきた。作品はメトロポリタン美術館、ブルックリン美術館、ダラス美術館、メニル・コレクション、ネルマン現代美術館、ポートランド美術館などに収蔵され、2011年にはグッゲンハイム・フェローシップ、2012年にはジョーン・ミッチェル財団助成金（Joan Mitchell Grant）を受賞している。
 
This monograph presents the work of painter Katherine Bradford (b. 1942, New York), who lives and works between New York City and Brunswick, Maine.
Since the 1970s, Bradford has unapologetically forged her own path in the art world. Alongside her daily painting practice, she has fostered a community of like-minded artists in both Maine and New York.
Her paintings are distinguished by their formal inventiveness and shifting sense of figure and ground. Heroes and lovers, families and couples, businessmen and solitary figures all emerge as characters charged with narrative presence. Built up through layered applications of acrylic paint, her luminous chromatic scenes move between humor, pathos, and abstraction, inviting a wide range of metaphorical readings.
The publication features an essay by London-based art critic Allie Biswas exploring the metaphysical dimensions of Bradford's work, a conversation with artist and writer Daniel Gerwin, a biographical text by her children Laura and Arthur Bradford offering an intimate perspective on the artist's life and practice, and an overview essay by Sandro Droschl, Director of Halle für Kunst Graz.
Featuring more than 130 works from 2015 onward, the book places particular emphasis on Bradford's recent Swimmers and Mother Paintings series, tracing her distinctive vision of motherhood and womanhood.
Bradford's paintings embrace uncertainty. Rather than offering fixed narratives, they invite viewers to navigate dreamlike yet strangely familiar worlds through their own perceptions and intuition.
Bradford is represented by Canada, Campoli Presti, and Kaufmann Repetto. She has exhibited at numerous museums and institutions, including MoMA PS1 and the Brooklyn Museum. Her works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Menil Collection, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, the Portland Museum of Art, among others. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2011 and a Joan Mitchell Grant in 2012.
