Jule Wild / Find me near the chestnut trees

Jule Wild / Find me near the chestnut trees

2021年に出版された前作『it was snowing outside (and it took her two days to notice)』では、ウクライナでの出会いや体験をドキュメンタリー写真によって綴り、詩的な表現へと昇華させていた。

A photobook by Jule Wild, a German photographer currently based in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Close friends, new daily routines, moments of happiness. Throughout her work, Wild has turned her attention to the seemingly ordinary moments of everyday life, capturing each fleeting moment with love and passion.

In her previous photobook, it was snowing outside (and it took her two days to notice), published in 2021, she documented her encounters and experiences in Ukraine through documentary photography, transforming them into a beautiful, poetic expression.

Then, on February 24, 2022, Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Since then, Wild has been trying to capture through her photographs the new reality faced by her Ukrainian friends.

How do people build new daily routines amid so much uncertainty? How do they regain a sense of normality in the midst of madness? And how do they find moments of happiness while surrounded by so much fear and devastation?

With so many things happening all at once, even a simple question like "How are you?" has become incredibly difficult to answer.

Alongside Wild's photographs, the book also includes personal writings and notes contributed by her dear friends Anastasiia Kaminska, Oleksii Stislavsky, and Vitalii Matukhno. These texts reveal their vulnerability, offering words that are at times painfully honest, deeply personal, and remarkably open.

Having introduced this book partly through the artist's own words, it is perhaps inevitable that we approach these photographs with certain preconceptions because of the war. Yet even when we set that context aside for a moment and look at the photographs themselves, we find a remarkably poetic work of documentary photography.

The book also features a distinctive cover made from a textile commonly used for sandbags, adding another thoughtful dimension to its physical design.
