フィンランド・ヘルシンキ生まれ、現在はパリを拠点に活動する画家、ヘンニ・アルフタンによる一冊。
本書のためにアルフタンは、私たちが毎日目にしながらも、実はきちんと見ていない身の回りのものへ目を向け、その中にアルファベットの痕跡を探した。そして、文字たちは意外にも、ずっと目の前にあった。
そうしたアルファベットの痕跡を、アルフタンは色画用紙に色鉛筆で描いていく。
もっとも、すべての文字が見つかったわけではない。いくつかは、いまなお発見されるのを待っている。
現実を注意深く観察し、見慣れたもののなかに潜む「イメージ」を描き続けてきたアルフタンらしい、世界をほんの少しだけ丁寧に見つめ直すため、画家からのささやかな招待状のような一冊。
Rookie Booksの書籍は、255×180mmのサイズと16ページの厚手のカードボードという共通のフォーマットで制作されている。限られたページ数だからこそ、一枚一枚のイメージが際立ち、厚手のボード紙はページをめくるたびに作品としての存在感を生み出している。その限られた形式のなかに、作家それぞれの表現が凝縮されていることも、このシリーズならではの魅力である。
 
A book by Paris-based Finnish painter Henni Alftan, born in Helsinki.
For this book, Alftan turned her attention to the ordinary objects that surround us every day but often go unnoticed, searching for traces of the alphabet within them. She discovered that the letters had been hiding in plain sight all along.
These traces of the alphabet are delicately rendered in colored pencil on sheets of colored paper.
Not every letter has been found, however. Some are still waiting to be discovered.
True to Alftan’s practice of carefully observing reality and uncovering the images embedded within familiar things, Some Letters is a quiet invitation from the artist to look at the world around us just a little more closely.
Every Rookie Books title shares the same format: 255 × 180 mm with 16 thick cardboard pages. This deliberately limited format allows each image to stand on its own, while the substantial board pages give every turn the presence of an individual work. Within these constraints, each artist brings a distinctive visual language, making the series itself a celebration of the many possibilities of the artist’s book.
