Bernard Voïta / Follow Me

スイスを拠点に活動するアーティスト／写真家、ベルナール・ヴォイタによる一冊。
ヴォイタの制作は、彫刻と写真のあいだに位置している。身の回りのオブジェを慎重に配置して場面を構築し、それを特定の一点から撮影することで作品を生み出す。その写真はコラージュのようにも見えるが、画面に見えるすべては実際にそこに存在していたものであり、「つくられた現実」への介入によって生まれている。
本書『Follow Me』では、自宅にあるさまざまなものが、ある一点から見たときだけ一本の連続した線へと結びつく。その線はページからページへ、表紙へ、そして再び出発点へと続いていく。
255×180mm、16ページの厚手のカードボードというRookie Books共通のフォーマットは、この線をたどるための小さな舞台となる。ページをめくるたびに、写真集でありながら立体作品を辿っていくような感覚が生まれ、本というかたちそのものが作品へと組み込まれていく。
タイトルが示すように、指で線をたどってみてもいい。あるいは、次の雨の日の午後に、彼の試みに倣ってみるのもいいだろう。
 
A book by Swiss artist and photographer Bernard Voïta.
Voïta’s practice exists somewhere between sculpture and photography. Carefully arranging everyday objects into constructed scenes, he photographs them from a single, precisely determined viewpoint. Although the resulting images resemble collages, everything visible in the frame physically existed before the camera, with every visual effect created through interventions in a carefully constructed reality.
For Follow Me, Voïta arranged various objects in his apartment so that, from one exact viewpoint, they align into a single continuous line. That line travels from page to page, around the cover, and eventually returns to where it began.
The shared Rookie Books format—255 × 180 mm with 16 thick cardboard pages—becomes a small stage on which this line unfolds. As each page is turned, the experience is less like looking through a photo book than tracing the path of a three-dimensional work, where the book itself becomes an integral part of the artwork.
As the title suggests, you can follow the line with your finger. Or perhaps, on the next rainy afternoon, you might follow Voïta’s example instead.
