サバ州ラナウを拠点とする6人編成のバンド「トゥニ・スンダタン」による、6曲入りのデビューEP。
トゥニ・スンダタンは、ボルネオ周辺に暮らす先住民族ドゥスンの伝統音楽に、現代的なロックのエッジを融合させることで新たな息吹を吹き込み、消滅の危機にある固有の文化遺産の再生を目指している。
本作『Alunan dari Tanah Tinggi』（「高地からの響き」の意）は、ラナウの山岳地帯の風景と生活に着想を得た作品であり、それは単なる楽曲集にとどまらない。文化的アーカイブとして機能し、スンダタンやトブリといった伝統楽器を再び息づかせるとともに、クリンタンガン、ソンポトン、ブンカウ、トゥントゥグ、さらにはスリンやトゥラリといった笛類の音色も収めている。
このEPは、2017年以降サバおよびボルネオ各地を巡り、スンダタンの歴史の痕跡を追い続けてきた長年の調査と旅の成果でもある。バンドの創設者でありスンダタンの製作者でもあるギンドゥン・マクフェディ・サイモンは語る -その音を時代の中に埋もれさせないために。音楽、録音、ライブパフォーマンス、そして映像記録を通じて、次世代へと手渡していくために。
またメンバーにはPangrok Sulapの創設メンバーも在籍している。地域コミュニティやボルネオ島の先住民族が直面する問題に向き合い続けるその実践とも、本作は深く響き合っている。
トゥニ・スンダタンの音楽は、ボルネオの文化や慣習、アイデンティティを内包したインストゥルメンタルである。ジャンルの境界を越境し、地響きのように、聴く者を揺さぶる。
 
A six-track debut EP by the six-piece band Tuni Sundatang, based in Ranau, Sabah.
Tuni Sundatang fuses the traditional music of the Dusun people—indigenous to the Borneo region—with a contemporary rock edge, breathing new life into it while seeking to revive cultural heritage on the brink of disappearance.
Their EP Alunan dari Tanah Tinggi (“Echoes from the Highlands”) draws inspiration from the mountainous landscapes and daily life of Ranau. It is not merely a collection of songs. Functioning as a cultural archive, it reanimates traditional instruments such as the sundatang and toburi, while also featuring the layered sounds of kulintangan, sompoton, bungkau, tuntug, as well as flutes like the suling and turali.
This EP is also the culmination of years of research and travel since 2017, tracing the historical remnants of the sundatang across Sabah and the wider regions of Borneo. As the band’s founder and sundatang maker, Gindung McFeddy Simon, explains—this work exists so that its sound will not be buried by time; so that it may be passed on to future generations through music, recordings, live performances, and visual documentation.
The group also includes a founding member of Pangrok Sulap, and the project resonates deeply with their ongoing engagement with local communities and the issues faced by indigenous peoples of Borneo.
Tuni Sundatang’s instrumental music embodies the culture, customs, and identity of Borneo. Transcending genre boundaries, it reverberates like a deep rumble, unsettling and moving the listener.
