Sunik Kim / Smoking area:performative photography

韓国・ソウルを拠点に活動する写真家、キム・ソニクによる作品集。
2022年9月の1ヶ月間にわたり行われたプロジェクト。街中で喫煙している男性たちに歩み寄り、事前の通告なしに写真を撮り続け、その反応を記録した。プロジェクトへの参加を快諾した男性たちは「写真（イメージ）」として、掲載を拒否した男性たちは「テキスト」として、本書に収録されている。
喫煙という、ある種緊張を和らげる行為。唐突に撮影された男性たちの表情や仕草。そして、写真の掲載を許可するか否か。この実験的なプロジェクトには、作者のユーモアと挑戦が詰め込まれており、ソウルの都会的な風景とともに一冊へとまとめられている。
 
An artist book by Seoul-based Korean photographer Sunik Kim.
This project was carried out over the course of one month in September 2022. Approaching men smoking in the streets of Seoul, Sunik Kim photographed them without prior notice and recorded their reactions. Those who agreed to participate in the project are included in the book as “photographs (images),” while those who refused permission are represented as “texts.”
Smoking — an act that in some ways relieves tension. The expressions and gestures of men suddenly confronted by the camera. And the question of whether or not to permit the publication of their image. Filled with the artist’s humor and spirit of experimentation, this project brings together these encounters alongside the urban landscapes of Seoul in a single volume.
