Sunik Kim / Big Dream

韓国・ソウルを拠点に活動する写真家、キム・ソニクによる作品集。
ソニクの関心は、大きく分けて「外的要素」と「内的要素」の二つにある。「外的要素」とは、社会構造によって生じる大小さまざまな現象であり、「内的要素」とは、一個人として「今日という一日をどう生きるべきか」という問いである。目には見えないこれら二つの要素が、どのように繋がり合っているのかを、写真という媒体を通して可視化しようと試みている。本作は、そのような作者の姿勢と探求の軌跡を収めた一冊である。
「希望」とは、現時点では計り知れない未来への期待であり、ときに心配や不安といった感情を伴う。そこには野望や欲望も入り混じっている。数えきれないほどの個別の「選択」が積み重なり、今、私たちが生きる都市を形づくっている。隙間なく立ち並ぶ建造物も、それ自体が無数の選択によって生み出されたものである。四方へ伸びる道路の方向も、そこを走る自動車のデザインも、それぞれ異なっている。人々は毎日、自ら選んだ服を纏い、街へ出ていく。
カメラを手に路上へ出た以上、必然的に「これ」か「あれ」のどちらかを撮ることになる。撮影前に抱いていた期待や希望は、シャッターを切った瞬間に姿を消し、満足のいく瞬間を求めながら、再び「これ」と「あれ」のあいだで新たな希望を抱く。
本作には、そのような日々の中に内在する、作者と他者の選択の蓄積が収められており、見落とされてしまう微かな「希望」も表出している。

Sunik Kim’s interests can largely be divided into two categories: “external elements” and “internal elements.” The “external elements” refer to the various phenomena produced by social structures, while the “internal elements” concern the question each individual faces: how should one live through today? Through photography, Sunik Kim attempts to visualize the invisible connections between these two dimensions. This publication traces the artist’s ongoing inquiry and way of looking at the world.
“Hope” is an expectation toward a future that cannot yet be measured, often accompanied by feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. Ambition and desire are also intertwined within it. Countless individual “choices” accumulate to shape the cities in which we live today. The densely packed buildings themselves are products of innumerable decisions. The directions of roads extending in every direction, and even the designs of the cars moving through them, all differ from one another. Every day, people put on clothes of their own choosing and step out into the city.
Once stepping into the streets with a camera in hand, one inevitably chooses to photograph either “this” or “that.” The expectations and hopes held before taking a photograph disappear the moment the shutter is released, only to be replaced by new hopes in the search for another satisfying moment between “this” and “that.”
This publication brings together the accumulation of choices made by both the artist and others throughout everyday life, while also revealing the subtle forms of “hope” that often go unnoticed.
