Sung Tieu / Without Full Disclosure
Hidden Story
Sung Theu (born 1987 in Hai Duong, Vietnam; currently based in Berlin) is one of the most prominent artists of her generation. She immigrated to Germany after reunification at the age of five, following her father, who had gone to East Germany as a contract laborer in the late 1980s. Drawing on her personal experience of migration, Sung Theu examines the ideological, economic, and sociopolitical structures that shape our social lives. Her work focuses on the decisive social foundations that determine who and what gains visibility. Her practice operates at the intersection of transnational trends, global capitalism, and dematerialized artistic interventions into traditional culture. Using a variety of media, including installation art, sculpture, photography, drawing, writing, sound, found objects, and memorabilia, Sung Theu has created an extremely minimalist world that examines the interdependence of historical and contemporary constructions of political power and their impact on the human psyche.
Following her award for the 9th Rubens Prize for New Artists, Seung Tieu created an experimental book project, "Without Full Disclosure." The project explores the subject of fracking, a controversial technique used to extract natural gas and oil. Working with data analyst Gary Allison, Tieu processed millions of entries from FracFocus, a US-based platform that documents fracking operations, analyzing the vast amounts of data and chemical components involved, taking into account their potential risks. She investigated the opaque public relations practices and questionable fracking industry practices in the US, as well as potential sites in Germany, taking over 600 photographs. Her artist's book combines these photographs with over 1,000 pages of data to highlight the immense risks to ecosystems and human health.
