Sophie Thun / for Noto Peninsula Print
  • Sophie Thun / for Noto Peninsula Print

We have received a special piece from Sophie Thun, an artist living in Vienna, Austria.

When I told her about the earthquake on January 1st, Sophie immediately agreed to create a work. This work, which is titled "for Noto Peninsula," was printed by Sophie Thun herself in the darkroom, one by one, by hand. And, according to her wishes, all proceeds from the sale of this print will be donated to the disaster area.

CYRO is currently selling prints in order to continue to support those affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024, and to help with the recovery of the affected areas. Donations will be sent to accounts set up by the affected municipalities.

Sophie Thun (born 1985, lives in Vienna, Austria)

Tung primarily works with the techniques, spaces, processes, and production and exhibition conditions of analog photography. Her work is deeply connected to the context of self-portrait in European art history, weaving together references dating back to the 16th century, and then focusing on the disadvantaged situations that young and aspiring artists today face in the art system. Tung spends much of her time in the darkroom, making direct contact with the photographic paper with her own body. In this way, she creates shadows and traces, which she then incorporates into new images and transforms into complex arrangements in space. By directly interacting with her photographic works, the origin of her artistic medium, painting, is always recognized and visualized.
