Sheila Hicks / New Work

American Academy of Arts and Lettersの新会員に選出されています。

A remarkable artist’s book that, as you run your hands over its pages and turn them, seems to bring forth even the tactile sensation of the works themselves.

This limited-edition artist’s book by American artist Sheila Hicks was published on the occasion of her first solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), New Work: Sheila Hicks.

The book itself is beautifully considered, from the texture of its cover and the paper to the color of the thread used in its exposed sewn binding, with careful attention paid to every detail. The simple act of turning the pages becomes an experience that seems to bring you into contact with Sheila Hicks’s work.

For nearly seven decades, Hicks has explored textiles as a sculptural form, continually expanding their expressive possibilities. Based in Paris since 1964, she works with both natural and synthetic materials, creating works at a wide range of scales—from intimate weavings made on small handheld frames to monumental installations that occupy entire architectural spaces.

Drawing inspiration from the objects, textures, and patterns she has encountered in the cities where she has lived and throughout a life of constant movement, Hicks incorporates places that hold personal significance into her work. Comet-like forms of vivid intersecting and multilayered lines, small works reflecting her daily experiments, and massive mounds of brilliantly colored fibers all carry traces of places such as the cobblestones of her courtyard and the lighthouse rising above the rocky island of Ouessant, France.

Like the exhibition at SFMOMA, this book offers a sense of Hicks’s ongoing process of continually transforming materials and forms. She describes this process herself as “walking the tightrope into the future.”

Hicks’s work is held in the collections of major museums around the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

Throughout her career, Hicks has received numerous honors, including the Archives of American Art Lifetime Achievement Award from the Smithsonian Institution (2010), an Honorary Doctorate from the École des Beaux-Arts (2014), the rank of Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur (2022), and the U.S. Department of State Medal of Arts (2023). In 2025, she was elected a new member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
