マレーシア・サバ州出身の版画アーティスト、リゾ・レオン（Rizo Leong）が手がけた児童向け絵本『Pesta Menuai』は、カアマタンの季節に合わせて制作された、14ページからなる木版画作品集でもあります。
サバ州で広く親しまれている収穫祭「Pesta Kaamatan（カアマタン）」は、稲作に携わる人々が大地の恵みに感謝し、豊穣を祝い、先人たちの精神に思いを寄せる大切な行事です。この本は、稲に実る美しさ、自然との共生の精神、そしてコミュニティの温かさを、子どもたちに伝えるために生まれました。
リゾはサバ州を拠点に活動するアーティスト・コレクティブ「Pangrok Sulap」のメンバーでもあります。
パンクロック・スゥラップは、木版画を通して地域コミュニティや先住民族が直面する問題を可視化し、芸術が社会を動かす力を持つことを示してきたグループです。彼らの活動はレジスタンスの精神と、サバ州の土地に根ざしたローカルな感覚が共存し、見る者に強烈な生命力を感じさせます。
そのなかでも、リゾの作品は「力強さと温もり」が同居していることが大きな魅力です。

Pesta Menuai is a children’s picture book created by Rizo Leong, a woodcut artist from Sabah, Malaysia. Produced in conjunction with the Kaamatan season, the book is also a 14-page collection of woodblock prints.
The harvest festival “Pesta Kaamatan,” widely celebrated throughout Sabah, is an important occasion in which communities involved in rice cultivation give thanks for the blessings of the earth, celebrate abundance, and honor the spirit of their ancestors. This book was born from a desire to share with children the beauty of ripening rice, the philosophy of living in harmony with nature, and the warmth of community.
Rizo is also a member of the Sabah-based artist collective Pangrok Sulap.
Pangrok Sulap uses woodcut prints to shed light on issues faced by local communities and Indigenous peoples, demonstrating the power of art to inspire social change. Their practice combines a spirit of resistance with a deep connection to Sabah’s land, generating a powerful vitality felt by all who encounter their work.
Among the collective, Rizo’s work stands out for its unique blend of “strength and warmth.”
The woodcuts featured in this book are no exception—within the bold lines and dynamic carving lies a tenderness that cherishes everyday rural life, as well as a gentle gaze toward the world of rice cultivation.
