Pangrok Sulap / Suwon project Zine
ZINE by Pangrok Sulap, an artist collective formed in Ranau, Sabah (Malaysia). This book is a zine that compiles the works produced by Punk Rock Slap when they participated in the Suwon Public Art Project held in South Korea in 2023. Punk Rock Slap created a work based on the theme of the symbiosis that is emerging between the military airport, urban development, and untouched nature in the western part of Suwon.
Pangrok Sulap
Punk Rock Slap is an artist collective made up of a diverse range of members including artists, musicians, and social activists. The collective's name, Pangrok, is a combination of the music genre punk rock, and Sulap, which means a rest hut used by farmers in Sabah. Punk Rock Slap was influenced by the resistance activities of the Yogyakarta woodblock print collective Tarin Padi, which they met through the Indonesian punk band Marginal, and since 2012 they have been using woodblock prints to confront local communities and the indigenous people of Borneo. It has drawn attention from both within and outside the region. As their name, which combines radicalism and localism, their message is to revitalize the communities of Sabah, northern Borneo, through art, to encourage awareness of the rights they have, and to combat political decadence caused by greed. We are raising our voices and encouraging people from all ethnic groups to unite.
