Pangrok Sulap / Sedekad Seni Merakyat

This is an art book by Pangrok Sulap, an artist collective formed in Ranau, Sabah, Malaysia.

Punk Rock Sulap is a diverse group of artists, musicians, and social activists. The collective name Pangrok is a combination of the musical genre punk rock, and Sulap, which refers to the rest huts used by farmers in Sabah. Influenced by the resistance activities of the woodblock print collective Taring Padi of Yogyakarta, whom they met through the Indonesian punk band Marginal, Punk Rock Sulap has been using woodblock prints to depict the issues faced by local communities and indigenous peoples on Borneo since 2012, attracting attention from both within and outside the region. As their name, which combines radicalism and locality, suggests, their message is to revitalize the community of Sabah in northern Borneo through art, to raise awareness of their rights, to speak out against political decadence caused by greed, and to encourage unity among multiple ethnic groups.

The book features a collection of original essays by 15 local writers, including activists, scholars, artists, and passionate supporters, as well as a record of their work and activities. It is a comprehensive record of the work, ideology, and values that Punk Rock Thrupp has been carrying out in the fields of art and activism for over a decade.

"Punk Rock Slub believes that an artist is not limited to creating artworks. An artist's social responsibility is to be a thinker for the community. In other words, art should be used as a tool or medium to promote ways to improve the lives of the community. This perspective is in line with the fact that "good art is something that serves others," as stated by the Indonesian collective Taring Padi. " _ Excerpt from the book
