Misa Asanuma / Caro
"Caro" is a collection of works by Japanese artist Misa Asanuma. It's a photobook of recent snapshots taken by the artist, inkjet printed on coated paper, typically used for flyers, and simply bound with a paperclip. It lacks any explanatory elements, such as details or commentary about the collection, or the artist's name or title; it's simply a collection of photographs.
The artist created this work based on the idea that "I think of photography as something really 'light' that anyone can do, and I feel uncomfortable with asserting individuality or the idea that it is something I created myself." Starting from this, the artist also placed importance on the speed of production, but instead questioned "how far can I let go of individuality?"
Since starting CYRO, I have introduced many works from overseas, but for some reason I was hesitant to feature Japanese artists. That's when I came across the work of Misa Asanuma. When I first saw it, I only had a superficial understanding of it, but the moment I opened the collection for the first time in two years, I was captivated. Since then, every time I turn the pages, scenes emerge that never fade.
I wanted to share this experience with as many people as possible, so I decided to carry this book at CYRO. This introduction started out as a personal experience, but it is a book that will leave a lasting impression on me. I hope you will pick it up.
I hesitate to write this in an introduction to this work, but I personally feel that Asanuma's appeal lies in her unique "voice" that emanates from her work. What is consistently felt in all of her works, whether they be photography, painting, ceramics, poetry, or video, is that they are imbued with the individual warmth of each person, like the voice that each person possesses. It is difficult to put into words, but it is certainly there. This feeling is expressed throughout Asanuma's works, and it blends lightly into the space, spreading out lightly, while at the same time strongly drawing you in. I hope you enjoy the traces of Asanuma's voice.
