Luo Yang / LUO YANG -Catalogue-
China continues to change rapidly. Among them, the figure of a woman, a young person, whom the artist has been photographing for more than 10 years. . .
A collection of works by Luo Yang, a photographer based in Shanghai and Beijing, China. The author was born in 1984 and belongs to the post-Mao generation that grew up in the turmoil of economic reforms to transform and open up China. Her portrait works depict a new Chinese youth culture that defies unilaterally imposed expectations and stereotypes of past history and culture. As a testament to the subject's individuality and personality, it reflects the profound changes taking place in China today, including femininity, gender and identity.
Currently, Luo Yang is described by Ai Weiwei, one of China's leading artists, as "a promising rising star in the Chinese photography world." He has held numerous exhibitions in Asia and overseas, and has received high acclaim.
Highly dramatic portraits and carefully constructed poses intersect with a raw and blurry snapshot-like aesthetic.
The artist explores and records with a film camera the changes that are taking place among young people in modern China, which have not been taken up much in the world until now. The portrait subjects are very realistic, showing people's strength and vulnerability at the same time. At first glance, people may appear to be delinquent and self-confident, but at the same time they are filled with anxiety and conflict.
In her first series, GIRLS, she has continued to frame women in order to gain a deeper understanding of the lives of Chinese women and of themselves. Empathy plays an important role in this relationship between author and model, highlighting shared feelings, interests and experiences. In her latest series, Youth, Lo Yang defies stereotypes, questions gender norms and sensitively shines a light on the diversity of China's young generation. As such, her work explores themes of youth, nudity and femininity, and celebrates personal development.
This collection of works, titled Catalogue, introduces 155 works, including major works from the beginning of the artist's career to the present, intertwining them like personal stories.
In a past interview, the author said:
What do you want to convey to the viewer?
“Everyone feels differently, but first of all, I want you to look at the girls in this photo, discover the possibilities of your life in this photo, and feel comfort and freedom.”
