ハワイ生まれ、現在ニューヨークを拠点に活動するアーティスト、レサ・ウィルソンによるアートブック。
ウィルソンの実践は、素材に対する実験に根ざしている。これまで複数のメディアを統合することで、写真と彫刻の視覚的・物理的な次元を拡張してきた。溶接されたコールテン鋼、流し込まれたコンクリート、アルミニウム板、ビニールといった工業素材を従来の写真と組み合わせることで、独自の制作プロセスを確立している。
自然風景の美しさを写し取ったイメージを彫刻にプリントし、それらを作品の表面に埋め込むことで、重量感や密度と軽やかさ、遊びとのあいだに強いコントラストを生み出し、独特のフォルムへと組み上げていく。自然世界は作品において主題であると同時に内容でもあり、再生や可能性の神話における風景の役割をめぐるメタファーとして機能している。
本書『Smoke Follows Beauty』では、作者自らの手によって穴あけや破り、切断、折りといった加工が施されている。収録されている写真の多くは、2023年から2024年にかけて、メイン州、グレイシャー国立公園、サンディエゴを旅した際に撮影されたもの。また、タイトルは、2020年に亡くなった父ジャック・ウィルソンが、焚き火のそばで煙が目に入ると不満を言う作者たちに、よく口にしていた言葉に由来している。

An artist book by New York–based artist Letha Wilson, born in Hawaii.
Wilson’s practice is rooted in material experimentation. By integrating multiple mediums, the work expands the visual and physical dimensions of photography and sculpture. Combining industrial materials such as welded Corten steel, poured concrete, aluminum sheeting, and vinyl with traditional photography, Wilson has developed a distinctive fabrication process.
Images capturing the beauty of natural landscapes are printed onto sculptural forms and embedded into their surfaces, producing unique configurations that emphasize a strong contrast between weight and density, and lightness and play. The natural world functions both as subject and content in the work, operating as a metaphor for the role of landscape within myths of renewal and possibility.
In Smoke Follows Beauty, several pages have been hole-punched, ripped, cut, and folded by the artist. Most of the photographs were taken during travels in 2023–24 through Maine, Glacier National Park, and San Diego. The title derives from a phrase often said by Wilson’s father, Jack Wilson, who passed away in 2020, when complaining about smoke blowing into their eyes around the campfire.

I love the process of developing these books, as a new way to approach my archive of photographs, and that they are touchable artworks. In this book I also included images of several photograms I printed in the BW darkroom this year that layer image and objects.
