ニューヨークを拠点にするアーティスト・写真家ジャック・ピアソンによる作品集です。
本書は、マイアミの美術館で開催された展覧会「Jack Pierson: The Miami Years」にあわせて刊行されたフォトブックであり、展示を構成したイメージ群を記録。
1960年代にニューイングランドで生まれたピアソンは、欲望、記憶、喪失、時間の経過といった普遍的な主題を探求しながら、写真、彫刻、ドローイング、絵画、映像、書籍、インスタレーションといった多様なメディアを横断して制作を行ってきました。
また、ナン・ゴールディン、デイヴィッド・アームストロング、マーク・モリスローらと並び、写真というメディアの境界を押し広げた世代のひとりとして位置づけられています。1990年代初頭には、ニューヨーク、ボストン、ロサンゼルス、プロヴィンスタウン、マイアミ・ビーチにおけるクィアな日常やボヘミアン文化を親密な視点で捉えた作品によって注目を集めました。
パンクや広告の美学を背景に、風化したオブジェや拾得物、再利用された商業サインなどを取り入れるその実践は、ファッションやカルチャー誌のためのコミッションワークとギャラリーでの展示作品との境界を曖昧にし、それらが相互に影響し合う関係を築いています。
孤独や待機、放浪や逃避、すなわち別の場所や時間への希求といった主題は、彼の制作を通底する感覚として一貫して現れています。さらに、フェリックス・ゴンザレス＝トレス、タブー！、ロバート・ゴバー、キキ・スミスらと同時代に、エイズ危機の只中で成熟した世代として、その儚さや脆さ、孤独といった感覚もまた彼の作品に深く刻まれています。
 
A monograph by New York–based artist and photographer Jack Pierson.Published on the occasion of the exhibition Jack Pierson: The Miami Years at a museum in Miami, this photobook documents the body of images that comprised the show.
Born in New England in the 1960s, Pierson has explored universal themes such as desire, memory, loss, and the passage of time, working across a wide range of media including photography, sculpture, drawing, painting, film, books, and installation.
He is also considered part of a generation that expanded the boundaries of photography, alongside Nan Goldin, David Armstrong, and Mark Morrisroe. In the early 1990s, he gained recognition for his intimate portrayals of queer everyday life and bohemian culture in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Provincetown, and Miami Beach.
Incorporating the aesthetics of punk and advertising, his practice employs weathered objects, found materials, and repurposed commercial signage. His commissioned work for fashion and culture magazines often blurs with his gallery practice, forming a reciprocal relationship between the two.
Themes of isolation and waiting, wandering and escape—in other words, a longing for another place or time—run consistently throughout his work. Coming of age during the AIDS crisis alongside contemporaries such as Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Tabboo!, Robert Gober, and Kiki Smith, Pierson’s work is also deeply marked by a sense of impermanence, fragility, and loneliness.
