Erin O'Keefe / I saw the man with a telescope. [Print included]
Following the exhibition of the same name at Sargent's Daughters gallery in New York, and released in conjunction with a new exhibition at London's Seventeen gallery, "I saw the man with a telescope." is a vibrant, almost psychedelic collection of Erin O'Keeffe's latest work. It is the long-awaited follow-up to 2020's "Built Work" from Jane & Jeremy, the UK publisher renowned for its art-book approach.
O'Keeffe creates still life photographs that explore the uncertainty of spatial perception, highlighting the dynamic nature of visual interpretation. She continues the process of cutting and painting pieces of wood and arranging them against colorful backgrounds. The resulting images are often mistaken for abstract paintings, but a closer look reveals traces of her process: O'Keeffe's play with light and space, the overlapping blocks and shadows, and the rich texture of her roughly painted surfaces.
As the book's title, "I saw the man with a telescope," suggests, it alludes to the ambiguity of the images and the impossibility of a single, definitive interpretation. The three-dimensional scene captured by the camera lens is flattened and distorted, and as a result, the viewer is confronted with a confusing image that defies definitive clues. The works elude definitive meaning, existing in a space full of possibility and room for speculation.
This is a uniquely O'Keeffe adventure into perception that questions the very act of seeing. A striking book that transforms visual discrepancies into rich experiences.
