Course Kit: The Refusal Manual(否定マニュアル)

アナキスト革命家・政治活動家・作家として知られるエマ・ゴールドマン、同じくアナキストであり文化人類学者のデヴィッド・グレーバー。異なる時代の2人の言葉を起点とし展開する『The Refusal Manual（否定マニュアル）』は、Copyright/Reserved と CYRO の共同制作によるプロジェクトであり、石川県のお旅まつりとその弾圧の歴史から着想を得ています。お旅まつりは権力を転覆させる祭りです。子どもたちが主役となり、かつて周縁に追いやられていた女性たちが、跳ね返りと強靭さの象徴として現れます。本作は、身振りや断片、再解釈を通して、外部の視点から──女性と子どもが主導する「抵抗」がいかにして演じられうるかを探ります。
この祭りでは、子どもや女性が権力構造を反転させるという物語が中心的な焦点として存在してきました。ここで言う「否定（refusal）」とは、単に「ノー」と言うことではなく、支配的な構造や規範、期待から距離を取り、従わず、抵抗し、別の在り方や考え方を主張する姿勢を意味します。お旅まつりは権力を転覆させ得ます──子どもたちが舞台の中心に立ち、かつて周縁化されていた女性たちは跳ね返りの象徴として現れるのです。
 
本プロジェクトは、Copyright/Reserved の出版レーベルである Extensive Publishing による Course Kit シリーズの一冊として刊行。
Course Kit は、Copyright/Reserved とアーティスト、文化機関が協働し、文化的意義や歴史、記憶を、より広い読者に届く遊び心ある形式で紹介することを目的に立ち上げられたプロジェクトです。現在ではアーカイブの手法や制度的枠組みとも横断的に連携し、忘れられた歴史の再物語化や、記憶・アーカイブをめぐる新しい視点の提示へと発展している。
 
本書は、CYRO と Conture Concrete Lab との協働により、お旅まつりをサブコンテクストにして制作。2025年12月11日〜14日に開催される Tokyo Art Book Fair（東京都現代美術館）にて初披露され、アート出版コミュニティをはじめとする国際的な読者との新たな対話を目指します。

Anarchist revolutionary, political activist, and writer Emma Goldman, and anarchist and anthropologist David Graeber—words from these two figures, separated by time yet connected in spirit, form the starting point of The Refusal Manual. The project draws inspiration from the history of repression embedded within the Otabi Festival, a traditional event in Ishikawa that has continued for over three centuries, and emerges through the collaboration of Copyright/Reserved and CYRO.
 
The Otabi Festival temporarily inverts social power structures: children take center stage, while women—once marginalized—appear as symbols of resilience. Through gestures, fragments, and reinterpretations, the project explores how acts of refusal and rebellion can be staged with children and women as leaders, viewed through an outsider’s lens. The publication is released as part of the Course Kit series by Extensive Publishing, the publishing arm of Copyright/Reserved.
 
Course Kit was conceived as a collaborative platform between Copyright/Reserved, artists, and cultural institutions, aiming to present cultural significance, history, and memory in playful formats accessible to wide audiences. Over time, the project has expanded to intersect with archival methodologies and institutional frameworks, evolving into an effort to reconstruct forgotten histories and propose new approaches to archives and historical context.
 
Created in collaboration with CYRO and Conture Concrete Lab, this volume situates the Otabi Festival as its subcontext. The Refusal Manual will debut at the Tokyo Art Book Fair 2025 (December 11–14, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo), seeking to open new dialogues with international readers, particularly within the art publishing community.
