The Fotobus Manual was produced jointly by Christoph Bangert, a German-born photographer, educator, and bus driver, and his wife Chiho, a Japanese photographer and graphic designer.
The Fotobus Manual is the personal teaching manifesto of Christoph, the founder of the Fotobus Society. "Fotobus Society" is a network of approximately 900 students active in the fields of photography, film, art and media from more than 30 European universities and schools. A photography school on wheels, attending photo festivals, workshops, conferences and traveling.
When Christoph started Fotobus Society, he was completely ignorant about education. So, while writing down what seems to suit me, the 32 guiding principles described in this book came to mind. These are the author's goals and ideals of how he wants to teach.
This book is based on a 30-year-old Mercedes-Benz O 303 Omnibus repair manual that is actually used by the "Fotobus Society". The original monochrome design of the repair manual is combined with blue ink, images of the trip taken by members of the fotobus Society, and 32 instructions printed with gold silk screen printing, merging the three layers into one another. As a result, we created something completely new. The now published Fotobus Manual is a reproduction of the original artist's book, which looks very similar and follows the same concept, but was created using 3-color offset printing.
A photo school on wheels. By fusing one side of the road trip (blue) and one side of the teaching manifesto (gold) with the base of the repair manual, it is a work full of originality that goes beyond the fusion of photographs and text.
There is a sentence like this in the book.
“Ask not what life expects of you, but what life expects of you. What are your tasks, duties, and obligations in life? What? What kind of people do you have to look after? What are your responsibilities?..."
I feel that producing and leaving this book is one of the author's missions in life.
