Alba Yruela / Cherry Blossom, Don’t Cry. 桜花笑春風

Introduction
自然との深い結びつきを基点に、アルバ・ユルエラはこれまで、親密さと率直さが織り重なる作品を生み出してきた。友人や恋人、日常の風景、時には孤独の気配を帯びたセルフポートレート——彼女は身のまわりの世界を、あるがままに写し取っている。その写真には、ためらいのないまっすぐな視線と、繊細さが共存している。
『Cherry Blossom, Don’t Cry. 桜花笑春風』は、ユルエラが2023年の日本滞在中に制作したシリーズを基にした特別版である。彼女は当時、人生を十分に楽しめていないと感じ、深い悲しみに沈んでいたという。そんな時期に、ふと出会ったのが優しく咲き誇る桜の花だった。彼女はその瞬間を自身の言葉でこう綴っている。
「桜の静かな美しさが、そっと私を励ましてくれたように思います。そして私は思い出したのです。自分のやるべきことを、もう一度やってみよう、と。──咲くこと。私も。」
本エディションに添えられた「桜花笑春風（おうか しゅんぷう に えむ）」という言葉は、唐代の詩人・崔護の有名な詩「人面桃花」にある「桃花笑春風（とうか しゅんぷう に えむ）」に由来する。
「人の世が変わっても、花は変わらず同じように咲いている」「どれほど困難な状況でも、必ず春は訪れる」——この句が持つ意味は、ユルエラの『Cherry Blossom, Don’t Cry』に深く響き合う。
この想いを借り、日本の春の象徴である「桜」へと置き換えることで、新たな表現「桜花笑春風」が生まれた。
スペシャルエディションでは、ユルエラが『Cherry Blossom, Don’t Cry』から選んだ8点の写真——カラー4点、モノクロ4点——が収められている。デジタル（アーカイバル）・ピグメントプリントで制作された写真は、光や空気、質感の奥行きを卓越したニュアンスで表現している。
また本作の大きな特徴として、日本の伝統的な掛け軸形式を採用している点である。柔らかなピンク色を基調に特別に仕立てられた掛け軸は、従来の形式とは異なり、鑑賞者自身がプリントを差し替えることができる仕様となっており、作品を見るという観賞行為を触覚的で参加型の体験へともたらす。
季節が移りゆくなか、静かに咲く桜は、暗闇のあとに小さな光のきらめきをもたらした。
『Cherry Blossom, Don’t Cry. 桜花笑春風』は、その瞬間から生まれた——作家の内なる風景が形を成した表現である。
それは観る者の時間の中に、柔らかく寄り添うエディションである。
 
Rooted in a profound connection to nature, Alba Yruela has long created works that weave together intimacy and candor, photographing friends, lovers, everyday landscapes, and at times, self-portraits tinged with solitude. Her images hold a delicacy that coexists with an unhesitating directness, capturing moments as they are.
Cherry Blossom, Don’t Cry. 桜花笑春風 is a special edition based on a series produced during Yruela’s stay in Japan in 2023, where she encountered the quiet signs of renewal emerging from a period of feeling lost. At the time, She felt she wasn’t enjoying life enough, and she was deeply sad. It was in the midst of this deep sadness that she happened upon the gently blooming cherry blossoms.
She describes that moment in her own words:
“…And then the flowers came. I believe they helped me. Cherry blossoms, with their quiet beauty, reminded me to do my thing again. Bloom, too.”
The phrase accompanying this edition, “桜花笑春風 (Ōka shunpū ni emu)”, originates from a line in the Tang dynasty poet Cui Hu’s celebrated poem Renmian Taohua: “桃花笑春風 (Tōka shunpū ni emu)”.
Its meanings—that even as the human world changes, flowers bloom as they always have, and that spring will inevitably arrive, no matter how difficult the circumstances—resonate deeply with the spirit of Yruela’s Cherry Blossom, Don’t Cry.
Borrowing this sentiment and replacing “peach blossom” with “cherry blossom,” a symbol of spring in Japan, the new expression “桜花笑春風” was born.
This Special Edition comprises eight photographs—four in color and four in black and white—personally selected by Yruela from Cherry Blossom, Don’t Cry. 
Produced as digital (archival) pigment prints, the works render the depth of light, air, and texture with exceptional nuance.
A distinctive feature of this edition is its use of the traditional Japanese display format, the kakejiku (hanging scroll). Crafted in soft pink tones, the specially designed scrolls depart from conventional formats by allowing viewers to switch the prints themselves, transforming the act of viewing into a tactile, participatory experience.
Amid the shifting seasons, the quietly blooming cherry blossoms offered a small glimmer of light in the wake of darkness.
Cherry Blossom, Don’t Cry.桜花笑春風 emerges from that moment—an expression born from the artist’s inner landscape.
It is an edition that sits gently alongside the viewer’s own time.
